Welcome to A Dollar Earned, a personal finance blog. Remember a dollar saved, is a dollar earned.

I signed up with CashCrate.com today after being referred by another website, and so far it’s a nice little way to earn some extra cash. Most of the money to be made is by filling out short surveys and signing up for no cost deals, and sometimes deals that cost. But the decision is up to you.

For example, I had to fill out a survey this morning that required my contact information, and then a long question and answer about Taco Bell. That was an exception though, since most are simply one page fill out your information, and complete a free offer to earn anywhere from .25 to 1.00 dollar type deals.

There are pay offers as well, like join Boca Java for a few dollars, get some coffee and then CashCrate pays you. You can cancel the coffee subscription if you wish and still keep the money. That actually seems the quickest way to make money. I can forsee that filling out surveys and completing offers for under a dollar is going to take a while to get, to say, $30.

Overall I recommend CashCrate for some easy money. I’ve made about $5 in under 20 minutes. Not too bad.

No doubt everyone wishes to be successful. In discussing this, some fundamental principles like diligence, devotion and constancy should be borne in mind all the time.

Unfortunately, many people are “square pegs.” They work hard, but they lack contentment in their career. They feel unhappy and sometimes frustrated.

With Feng Shui, the ancient science of manipulating people’s living and work space, you can create harmonious interaction with the chi energies of the natural environment. The intangible forces create auspicious and inauspicious chi energy. It is important that you direct the auspicious chi energy to improve your career prospects. One effective way to harness truly good fortune for your career is the Life Aspiration Theory of Feng Shui.

The golden rule for activating career luck starts with the understanding of the octagon Bagua: its symbol, element, direction and meaning in relation to our life aspiration. Each trigram represents he following:

  1. Xuen Gua

  1. Sun Gua

  1. Li Gua

  1. Kun Gua

  1. Dui Gua

  1. Qian Gua

  1. Kan Gua

  1. Gen Gua

- Possess good health, harmony and unity of the family

- Become rich and wealthy

- Achieve recognition, respectability and humor

- Promote love life and enjoy a happy marriage

- Have filial solidarity and successful children

- Get help and support from rich and powerful people

- Advance to great heights in one’s career

- Enjoy success in learning and attain academic honors

From the chart, you can see that the trigram Kan Gua located in the North represents career success and that its element is Water.

If your home or office in this North sector has good Feng Shui, you will attain great heights in your career. With bad Feng Shui, bad luck will prevail and you will find it difficult to gain promotion or even to get a job.

To locate the career luck sector in your house, room or office, first purchase a Feng Shui compass. Next, stand at the entrance door. Draw a rough layout of the area, identifying each corner according to its compass direction. Then you will know which corner of the place is associated with which life aspiration.

Now you can energize your career luck. Apply the rationale of the Five Elements (Metal, Wood, Earth, Fire and Water). Bear in mind that Water is the element of North. Take note of the productive and destructive cycles of the Five Elements.

Water is produced by Metal, so Metal is good for Water

Water itself produces Wood, so Wood could exhaust Water.

Water is blocked by Earth, so Earth is harmful to Water.

Water destroys Fire; it overcomes Fire.

To strengthen the element of the North, use objects or colors that symbolize both the Water and Metal elements. Aquariums, fountains, waterfalls, swimming pools, even fishes and the like symbolize Water. Feng Shui wind chime, Good Luck coin, bells and other lucky charms made of Metal symbolize this element that creates Water. White, blue, black, chocolate brown and gray are all favorable for the North.

When your garden is in the North part of the house, you can place a fountain to activate excellent opportunities for career advancement. It must be in harmonious balance with the overall garden setup, however. Do not use oversized or oddly-shaped fountains; they might overwhelm the other chi energies.

If the Dragon side of your house happens to be the career sector, it is ideal to place an aquarium as this makes an excellent Water chi energizer.

If your main entrance door is in the career sector, use the Feng Shui wind chime to attract lucky chi energy. This should be made of Metal, having at the center a Yan-Sheng coin and a Holy Gourd hanging below. This allows the lucky chi energy to be channeled to the proper sector.

Your skills and intelligence will bring you to the summit of success. Your manners will allow you to get there fast and perhaps help you stay there for a long time.

While business and social etiquettes are not exactly the same, workplace conducts matter as well. They keep every person’s mind in the right perspective. They serve as reliable determinants in finding which employee has the class, the brains and the character to be deserving of advancement in the corporate ladder.

Of course, you do not have to be an elegant-looking business professional or a well-versed individual on the unwritten code of workplace etiquette to have proper behavior. For much of these manners are really based on common sense and everyday act of courtesy. There’s no complicated set of formula that needs to be memorized or intricate series of action that needs to be rehearsed again and again, only a sense of responsibility on what you think is appropriate in a given situation.

Here are 4 common workplace scenarios where proper applications of business manners count a lot.

  1. Your cell phone abruptly rings, interrupting an important business meeting. – The first option would be to leave the room to answer. Turning it off even before the corporate get-together started would have saved you the embarrassment. But since you have forgotten to deactivate it, the next best thing to do is to talk over it away from the hearing distance of your colleagues. Surely, you do not want to serve as a big-time distraction to a brainstorming session that means life and death to your company. If those around you have the patience to deal with it, then answer the phone quickly. Just make sure that you have a readied apology later on for the unceremonious interruption.
  2. You have been flooded by phone calls and everyone is demanding for an immediate return call. – If you have accepted a series of calls and people are already lined-up in the other line, then avoid holding anyone for more than 15 seconds. Telephone courtesy dictates that all calls received in one’s absence should be returned within 24 hours. Otherwise, the lack of urgency on your part will reflect the kind of mentality you have in dealing with work responsibilities. Don’t let yourself be branded as a slouch or a snail. Return calls as quickly as you can. By the way, if you are using the call waiting system, the first caller is always the number one priority.
  3. You are running on a scheduled meting with a client. – For the “power-hitting” people who roam the ever-busy corporate highway, getting stuck in a slight traffic jam will always be a significant nightmare. Because for them no time should ever be put into waste as every tick of the clock could mean goldmine, or bust, survival or death. So show a little respect to their business philosophy by making a call if your arrival will be delayed by more than 10 minutes. You do not deserve to be called a “professional” if you would not show up on a pre-arranged rendezvous or wait for at least 30 minutes before declaring that the time of your appearance will be somewhat hindered.
  4. It is that one momentous day of the year and you are confused on who exactly are the people you should give gifts to. - If you are the boss who is in charge of many important company affairs, your personal secretary and the other people in the department will be the ideal objects of your generosity. After being loyal to you the whole year, maybe it is high time that you hand them a simple reward that will also serve as a token of your sincere appreciation. If you are an ordinary employee, you can give a present to your boss only if they are good friends and gift-giving is a common practice within the organization. Presenting gifts to clients would be a good ploy but unless a special friendship is involved or unless you have previously agreed to exchange holiday souvenirs, then you are not obligated to do so. Lastly, you can give gifts to office personnel who have rendered special services during the years like the messenger, the postman and the building security guard. Just remember that if your friendly relationship with a fellow employee is outside the office, do your gift swapping outside the office.
